The Cincinnati Zoo opened in 1875 making it the fifth oldest zoo in the United States, it was also named a National Historic Landmark in 1987. The Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden features 1,896 animals and over 3,000 species of plants all housed in its 75 acres of land in Cincinnati. With over 1.2 million people visiting the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden it makes the Zoo one of the most visited attractions in Cincinnati as well as Ohio. In 2019, the USA Today ranked the Cincinnati Zoo, as the top zoo in North America.

The Cincinnati Zoo has some things that makes it very unique in comparison to other zoos across the country, including the first zoo to successfully breed California sea lions. The Cincinnati Zoo was also the home to the last living passenger pigeon, Matha and the last living Carolina parakeet, Incas. The Cincinnati Zoo was also the home to the viral Western Lowland Gorilla Harambe who was controversially shot and killed in 2016, when a three year old child climbed into Harambe’s enclosure. The incident became globally viral and brought a ton of attention to the Cincinnati Zoo.
