Opening in 1922, the Houston Zoo is located on 55 acres within the Houston famous, Hermann Park. The Houston Zoo is home to over 6,000 animals across 900 families of species. The zoo welcomes over two million visitors per year, making it the second most visited zoo in the United States and one of the most visited in the world. Functioning as a not-for-profit any revenue from the ticket sales at the zoo goes to support one of the 49 wildlife conservation projects across 27 countries that the Houston Zoo is involved in.

The Houston Zoo is broken into 12 different exhibits which are the following: African Forest, home to many different African species. McNair Asian Elephant Habitat, home to a herd of Asian elephants. Kipp Aquarium, habitats from the Pacific Ocean and Amazon Basin. Birds, features three sub-exhibits, Fischer Bird Garden, Tropical Bird House and Birds of the World. Carnivores, home to some of the world’s deadliest carnivores. Sea Lions, a large pool that houses California sea lions. Allen H. and Ethel G. Carruth Natural Encounters, simulates an adventure through a specific continent.

Wotham World of Primates, features a walk through some of the most rare and endangered primates. Texas Wetlands, home to American alligators, whooping cranes and bald eagles. Reptile and Amphibian, home to venomous snakes and exotic amphibians. Bug House, displays insects from around the world. Finally, the John P. McGovern Children’s Zoo which features a petting zoo for kids. Being located within Hermann Park the Houston Zoo is easily accessible by the Hermann Park metro line from Downtown Houston.
