Driving is the easiest and most efficient way of getting around Charlotte. Although they do offer public transportation in the forms of bus and rail, many of their attractions are spread out. Depending on what you are looking to do, Charlotte offers a variety of transportation options.

  • Light Rail
    • LYNX Blue Line Light Rail. $2.20 Each way, purchase passes from CATSPass App
    • This is the best option for game day. Get off at the Stonewall stop for a short walk to Bank of America Stadium and BB&T Ballpark. Get off at CTC Station which will put you right in front of the Spectrum Center for a Hornets game.

  • Streetcar
    • CityLYNX Gold Line. Free of charge
    • This streetcar runs through an area densely populated with food options, great for foodies.

  • Bus
    • Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) Bus Service. $2.20 for local routes, $3 for express routes, $4.40 for regional express routes. Kids 5 and under ride free.

How to get to and from CLT

Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) is the 11th busiest airport in the United States ranked by passengers. It is the 6th busiest airport in the world by aircraft movement. This international airport opened in 1935. It is the second largest hub for American Airlines, so we are confident if you are flying American Airlines you will be able to find some great departure times.  

 

Located only 8 miles from Downtown Charlotte, which is about a 15-minute drive, it is quite easy to get to and from CLT. If you are flying in for a Carolina Panthers, or a Charlotte Hornets game be sure to give yourself some added time before the game(s), traffic around any major airport can be unpredictable and you don’t want to miss being late to the game! 

 

Below are your best available options for how to get to Downtown Charlotte from CLT so you can start your sports getaway!

 

  • Taxi: Taking a cab from the airport to downtown Charlotte may be your best bet in terms of convenience. There is a taxi service available curbside on the Arrivals/Baggage Claim level. This stand has an attendant on duty to assist you 6:45am -12:12am. Estimated fares may vary depending on your destination however it will usually cost $30-$40 CAD. The ride to downtown will take 15 minutes one way. You can always arrange to use any taxi service with any provider before your arrival. Taxi providers we suggest are City Cab, Crown Cab, Green Cab and Yellow Cab. These companies are evaluated annually by CLT to ensure all taxis adhere to the guidelines set forth by CLT.  

 

  •  Ridesharing (Uber/Lyft): Another convenient way to get to downtown from CLT is ridesharing companies. Elite Sports Tours suggests Uber or Lyft. Fares estimates will be provided via the app. You can accept $17-$19 CAD one way. Something to keep in mind Uber X rides are cheaper than the taxis rates, usually. However, if you are interested in taking a different classification of Uber, you can expect to pay a little more. CLT has pickup areas for designated “Ride App '' vehicles. All designated pick up areas are located on the lower level, Zone 4. They are on the Arrivals/Baggage Claim level. Keep in mind there is an airport surcharge fee for all rides to and from CLT. This is standard for ridesharing options during airport pick ups and drop offs.

 

  • Limo & Shuttle Service (Car/Van): There are town car services available to pick you up at CLT and take you downtown. However, this is something you will need to arrange before you arrive. There are multiple local car services in Charlotte so be sure to read the reviews to make the best decision for you. Be Sure to check the CLT airport for a list of companies you can choose from. They are all reputable companies and will provide excellent service. The estimated price will be between $65 - $90 USD and you can purchase your tickets online.  

 

  • Rental Car: CLT offers a couple different car rental counters offering options from Enterprise, Hertz, Avis, and more. The Rental Car Facility on the Level 2 lobby of the Hourly Deck in the front of the terminal. Renting a car is a great way to explore a city at your own pace. Keep in mind rates will vary depending on demand, the type of car you want, and how many days you need it.   • Bus: Public Transit is a very reasonable price option however it can take much longer to get to you downtown. On average it will take around 25 minutes depending on the time of day. This is double the amount of time then some of the other options listed. The Charlotte Area Transit System is $4 CAD per person. Buses will run daily every 20 minutes during the week and every 30 minutes on the weekend. They offer many stops near several Center City hotels. Which is the most likely hotel location an Elite Sports Tours Rep will recommend for your Sports Packages.     

 

  • Airport Shuttles: Some hotels in Charlotte offer a complimentary shuttle service to and from CLT for their guests. Be sure to ask your Elite Sports Tours representative about your hotel’s shuttle service, if applicable. Pick-up times can be coordinated by communicating your flight information with your hotel.

 

For getting to Downtown Charlotte from CLT we recommend either taking an Uber or the Taxis. Uber is an ever-reliable option. It is your most efficient choice and the cost is very reasonable. With that said if you feel more comfortable using a taxi because you aren’t familiar with ridesharing services then that would work as well. The choice is yours.
